Millions of motorists are set to hit the road in search of a UK getaway, despite forecasts predicting that temperatures will drop over this bank holiday weekend.
AA estimates that some 18 million cars will set off on a mini break, with Brighton, Bournemouth, Newquay and Blackpool among the most popular destinations.
But Britons are being warned to prepare for the change in weather over the long weekend.
Steve Willington, senior forecaster at the Met Office, said: "The key message is that people should consider the weather forecast when making their plans for the bank holiday weekend.
"A change to much poorer weather is expected and this comes in stark contrast to the recent warm and mainly settled weather."
Motorists are also being warned of the significant increase in congestion as millions rush to get away on Friday. The AA expects traffic jams to be 33 per cent worse than usual, while roads will be ten per cent busier on Bank Holiday Monday.
The Highways Agency has announced that many of the roadworks being carried out on the motorways will be suspended for the weekend to help ease the problem of congestion.
