As Brits tighten their belts, now could be the ideal time to take a holiday close to home.

Essential travel insurance aside, there are a number of ways in which UK tourists can cut the cost of a break and taking a domestic holiday is just one option.

Press and public relations manager for VisitBritain Elliot Frisby said that due to current exchange rates, Brits could find holiday spots in the USA and Europe are more expensive.

He said that the UK offers "a great deal of potential" for tourists.

Mr Frisby pointed out the wide variety of breaks available in Britain, with popular destinations including the Lake District, the Cotswolds, a city break or a seaside getaway.

Research from VisitBritain suggests that about 20 per cent of Brits are planning to save money this year by taking a holiday in the UK.

Travel insurance from InsureandGo can cover a domestic break or one further afield, all for a low cost.
