From next Tuesday (February 27th) motorists caught using a mobile phone while driving could be liable for a £60 fine, three points on their licence - and a two-year prison term.

Studies have consistently shown that talking on mobiles while driving lengthens drivers' reaction time by disrupting their concentration.

Authorities around the country will be implementing a number of new measures to encourage drivers to comply with the rules.

For example, Hampshire County Council is advertising on local radio and have contacted over 6,000 businesses informing them of the change.

Councillor Hazel Harding, chair of the Local Government Authority's Safer Communities Board, said: "If you use a phone whilst driving you are not only putting your own life in danger, but those of innocent people around you."

Councils are also advising drivers to switch their phones off completely when they are at the wheel and pull over into a safe place to pick up messages.

Although it is legal to use a hands free kit in the car, if drivers are found to be not in proper control of the vehicle, the penalty will be the same.
