The leading travel insurance company InsureandGo (www.insureandgo.com) estimates that as many as 6,150 travel insurance baggage claims were submitted to UK insurers between April and June this year(1).
Of these claims, it estimates that 50.4% were for damaged items, 26% for lost or delayed luggage and 23.6% for missing items taken from people’s luggage.
Type of baggage claim Estimated percentage of travel insurance baggage claims made between April and June 2008 Estimated number of travel insurance baggage claims made between April and June 2008

Lost/delayed 26% 1,599

Perry Wilson, founder of InsureandGo, said: “Between April and June this year, we estimate that the travel insurance industry has received around 68 claims a day for lost or damaged baggage, but this is only the tip of the iceberg because many victims of this problem will not have had insurance. It is clear that the aviation industry needs to do more to reduce the number of bags they lose.”
