Motorists spend around a third of the working year at the wheel of their car, according to new research.

A study by Bank of Scotland Vehicle Finance found that around 70 days a year are spent behind the wheel, on average.

The report suggested that this might in some way lose businesses money as employees waste hours of time not doing work, website MotorTorque reports.

Despite this, three quarters of the respondents said that they would not take a bus, while a third said that they would not catch the train.

"There is certainly a clear lack of direction by employers when it comes to encouraging alternative modes of transport," said Sean Bingham, director of new business at Bank of Scotland Vehicle Finance.

"Whilst drivers often enjoy the comfort that their own vehicle provides it is becoming evident that employers need to adopt a more flexible approach when it comes to travel arrangements."

With so much time spent behind the wheel, it's important that motorists are adequately covered. InsureandGo offers great value car insurance. Call for a quote.
