According to a new study, 78 per cent of households make joint decisions on where their next holiday will be.

The Norwich and Peterborough N&P survey found that six per cent of men make the decision, while 15 per cent of women take the reins when it comes to booking holidays.

Such results form part of a wider study that looked at the decision-making habits of UK consumers in a number of broad areas, with the results suggesting that in most households, 13 out of 16 spending categories are considered jointly.

The financial firm reports that somewhat stereotypically, men made solo decisions in only three areas - buying cars, electrical goods and DIY equipment.

Gary Lacey, group product manager at N&P, said: "Although men are generally the main income earners in a family, it is fascinating to see that most financial decisions are actually made jointly by both the mother and the father."

Making decisions on family savings products such as life insurance policies was also found to be a joint affair, with 44 per cent seeing it as a collaborative effort.

The BBC reports that taking out a life insurance policy is one of the most important decisions to make when planning to start a family.
