With downloads becoming a dominant trend among the nation's music lovers, it is important that people remember to back up their tracks.

Such is the claim of moneysupermarket.com, which has reported that more than £7 billion worth of mp3s have gone missing across the country as people fail to keep spare copies of their collection.

For an unfortunate 30 per cent of downloaders, the cost of failing to back up may have been particularly acute as they admitted to having lost their entire music library.

James Parker, commercial manager of broadband at moneysupermarket.com, exclaimed: "I'm surprised there aren't more people backing up - especially when you think of how much an entire collection could be worth."

Elsewhere, Virgin Money recently urged consumers to check the terms of their home insurance to establish whether or not they will be covered for the loss of mp3s.

It urged people to keep records of their purchases to enhance their chance of a successful claim.
