In the wake of financial turbulence of a degree not seen since the Great Depression, millions of Brits have cancelled holiday plans in order to protect their economic livelihood.
Such is the claim of price comparison site uSwitch, which indicates that as many as 8.3 million people have done so.
It indicated that this was just one of the ways that people are looking to make lifestyle changes that will protect them from going under in the current economic storm.
Other widely adopted measures included reducing the number of charitable donations made, as well as curtailing trips to the pub.
According to the group, more than 20 million people no longer head down to their local on a regular basis.
"There is no doubt that 2008 has been one of the toughest years that consumers have witnessed in a long time - and it looks set to get tougher," warned Ann Robinson, director of consumer policy at uSwitch.com.
Elsewhere, moneysupermarket.com has warned that with a number of airlines failing in the wake of high fuel prices and lower passenger volumes, the need for
travel insurance is heightened.
