The Association of British Drivers (ABD) has once again spoken out against what it claims are 'political speed limits' in Lincolnshire.

The ABD's comments were particularly a response to plans by Lincolnshire County Council to reduce the speed limit on the A52 between Boston and Skegness.

According to the council, the reason behind the reduction in the speed limit was because of the A52's popularity as a major route for coastal access, and the need to reduce traffic levels in this area.

Lincolnshire Council would rather the traffic continue north of Boston on the A16.

But the ABD strongly disagreed arguing that the reason behind the heavy use of the A52 was because it was the only major route for coastal access, and the only connection between Boston and Skegness.

'It is barking mad to suggest that a speed limit on a major road should be reduced to 'discourage traffic' simply because lots of people use the road, such an opinion is symptomatic of the insane manner in which roads are viewed by councils these days,' said ABD spokesman Nigel Humphries.

Retired police officer Keith Pear, now working for the ABD, also criticised the use of speed limits for political rather than safety reasons.
