Older drivers should be checked to ensure they can drive, and younger drivers should be encouraged to take a one year learning course, the Association of British Insurers (ABI) said on Wednesday.

The ABI indicated that people are driving for longer, but after the age of 75-80 the accident rate increasees significantly.

Spokesperson Malcolm Tarling said older people should be fit to drive, but if not there should be help to encourage use of other forms of transport and with the transition.

"It's important not to tar people with the same brush, there are responsible older drivers and also very good younger drivers but the reality is that facts don't lie," Mr Tarling said.

The ABI spokesman was also referring to a report from July by the House of Commons Transport Committee that recommended the adoption of a one-year training programme for young people before they are allowed to take their driving tests.

The association agreed with the government report that this would likely reduce the rates of accidents on Britain's roads.
