With Christmas just a few days away, those looking to purchase a four-legged friend to give to their loved ones have also been reminded of the need to take out pet insurance.

Such is the assertion of the Association of British Insurers (ABI), which reports that a significant number of pet owners are often unaware of how expensive getting vet treatment can be should an animal become ill or have an accident.

As such, it was claimed anyone who either gives or receives a pet this festive season should ensure that they obtain pet insurance should the worst happen.

Nick Starling, director of general insurance and health for the ABI, said: "Having pet insurance in place means that pet owners can have the confidence that their pets will get the best treatment without having to find money to cover large bills."

He added that medical attention for animals can cost thousands of pounds.

Mr Starling's comments come after research commissioned by the ABI also shows that just under a third (31 per cent) of Brits would consider buying a pet to give as a Christmas gift.

In other news, Pet Healthcare recently advised those wishing to take their animals away over the festive season to ensure that they have adequate pet insurance in place ahead of travelling.

InsureandGo provides pet insurance to help ensure your four-legged friend is treated swiftly without causing financial worries for the household, should it require urgent medical attention.ADNFCR-857-ID-18941584-ADNFCR
