The Association of British Insurers (ABI) on Tuesday recommended for travellers not to reject insurance even for very short breaks.

Arguing that 'it doesn't take more than a couple of minutes' to lose one's bags or have them stolen, spokesperson Malcolm Tarling advised travel insurance even in short trips.

Mr Tarling also pointed to research by InsureandGo that showed there had been a huge increase in claims for lost baggage this year in comparison to 2006.

The insurance company had received 1,133 baggage claims in the first half of last year, but this had almost doubled to 2,094 in the same time period this year.

And data from the Association of European Airlines revealed a 22 per cent increase in lost bags across Europe in spite of an increase in passengers of 1.4 per cent.

Travel insurance was the best way to ensure that lost baggage did not have a negative affect a short break, said Mr Tarling.

Heathrow airport has been the focus of increased coverage in the press due to its problems with baggage handling.

'I'd say [travel insurance is] very important, even for a couple of days. It doesn't take more than a couple of minutes for you to lose your bags,' said Mr Tarling.
