Life insurance claims could become a little easier to make if the Association of British Insurers (ABI) receives a positive response to its recent calls.

Director general Stephen Haddrill spoke at a recent conference held jointly by the ABI and the Institute for Public Policy Research.

He said: "To further streamline the claims experience for consumers we are calling for a new way of dealing with life insurance payments."

This, he added, would "help to avoid any financial hardship that people can suffer while they are waiting for lengthy legal processes".

Mr Haddrill's comments come as the ABI has published a new leaflet urging individuals to view life insurance as a means of protecting their income beyond death.

Listing the product alongside other forms of income protection, the organisation explains that, with life insurance in place, households can help to cope financially if the main breadwinner of the family should die unexpectedly.
