The Association of British Insurers (ABI) revealed life insurance policies were paid out on in 90 per cent of cases this year, this is in comparison to 80 per cent in 2005.

It claimed to have helped more than 100 families per day successfully claim on their critical illness insurance, with an average payout of £52,000 - more than twice the average salary.

Nick Starling, ABI director of general insurance and health, commented: "Insurance companies want to pay all valid claims, which is why the ABI is not complacent and continues to look at ways to reduce the number of claims declined even further."

Elsewhere, people worried about the impact of cancer on their lives could soon benefit from a new type of treatment that is bespoke to their body.

Research from CancerPartnersUK has indicated genome mapping of a person's unique DNA could help scientists better understand how cancers develop and in turn, this could be used to create more effective treatments.
