The Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) has responded to recent concerns over baggage losses.
ABTA advised travellers to properly tag their luggage and write their mobile phone on their tags, as well as make sure to keep the receipt.
The comments came after recent figures showed an increasing number of bags are being lost or delayed in transit.
British Airways is expected to lose 1.3 million bags in 2007, with one in 35 passengers for the airline expected to be affected between April and June, the Association of European Airlines has reported.
Sean Tipton, spokesman for ABTA, also recommended travellers to be persistent with airlines as only about two per cent of baggage is truly lost, the rest simply delayed.
"If an airline hasn't returned a bag to you after 21 days, you can say to them 'as far as I am concerned, you have lost my bag.' So there is a cut off point when you can treat it as a lost bag and they have to treat it as a lost bag as well," said Mr Tipton.
