Chief Constable Frank Whiteley from the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) has commented on the possibility of traffic cameras being used more widely.

Speaking on BBC One's Lunchtime News he responded to reports that the police would be making greater use of traffic cameras in their investigations.

Mr Whiteley sought to reassure civil rights groups that see a potential danger for civil liberties if the police use these powers too widely.

He argued that the concerns on civil liberties were understood by the police: "I think we've got to balance the desire that people have for the police service to do its best and prevent crime… with of course concern about civil liberty issues."

Police authorities are looking to extend the existing network of cameras, rather than establishing a completely new scheme, Mr Whiteley added.

Some of these cameras had helped in the finding witnesses to fatal accidents or solving murders and serious robberies.

Mr Whiteley also commented that road pricing was a "completely separate issue" after concerns that traffic cameras would be used for this purpose.
