While travel insurance, expenses and other costs are all part of the price of making travel arrangements nowadays, increases in air passenger duty (APD) could be putting many off booking a trip, one aviation expert has noted.

David Bishop, head of policy at the Airport Operators Association, said that if this money was spent on encouraging individuals to fly then it would help to boost the country's economic recovery, as more people would do business overseas.

He noted that attracting tourism to this country and enabling Brits to have access to cheaper air travel will help boost the economy and therefore increasing the tax on air travel is not the right thing to do.

Mr Bishop commented: "We want tourism and we want people to come and visit this country, we want our companies to go abroad and win market share yet at the same we are increasing a tax which seems like a soft option."

It was announced in this year's Budget that APD will rise from £55 to £170 for long-haul passengers - those travelling over 6,000 miles.
