Brits heading off on a long-haul trip should remember to take out comprehensive
travel insurance to protect their belongings while they are away.
However, fewer people could be boarding planes to faraway destinations because of a rise in air passenger duty (APD), which may impact on the UK aviation sector, it has been argued.
David Bishop, head of policy at the Airport Operators Association, noted that the government's decision to increase APD will put many people off taking long-distance trips, as the tax is set to rise by more than £100 per person for those travelling over 6,000 miles.
He said: "Given the nature of the population, the number who have moved abroad in the last ten to 15 years is going to disproportionately impact on people who rely on long haul aviation to visit friends and family."
Chancellor of the Exchequer Alistair Darling argued when announcing the April Budget earlier this year that increasing APD would be the best option to ensure the long-term stability of aviation in the UK, despite calls from airlines not to do so.
InsureandGo offers travel insurance to help replace items that get lost or damaged in transit, which could include long-haul flights.
