The introduction of increased Air Passenger Duty (APD) could impact on the number of routes being offered to those looking to get away from it all this winter, it has been claimed.

Richard Tams, head of UK and Ireland sales at British Airways, commented that there is so far little sign of recovery in the global aviation sector, with companies already cutting four per cent of capacity for this winter.

Anyone planning to take an overseas excursion this winter, or earlier could be interested in cheap travel insurance as one way to cut down the costs of going abroad during the credit crunch.

He said: "[APD] is a stealth tax and it is going to have an effect of suppressing demand and it is going to make it more difficult for airlines to find a way out of this downturn."

According to research carried out by the British Airline Pilot's Association, 90 per cent of adults aged between 16 and 64 claimed that they would rather fly to Amsterdam to get a connecting flight rather pay an additional £85 for travelling to a long-haul destination from the UK.

InsureandGo offers cheap travel insurance to help individuals keep down the cost of heading overseas.
