Nearly a fifth (19 per cent) of people will travel over the festive period, potentially leaving their home at risk of burglary, according to a new study by Halifax
Home Insurance.
Research by the firm suggests that of those intending to leave their property during the holidays, 19 per cent state that they have no intention of improving their home security measures before they go.
Marty Foulds, senior claims manager at the provider, states that it is easy to forget about home security with all the excitement of Christmas, but reminds consumers that the festive season is seen by many thieves as an opportune time take advantage of lapses in security.
"People can take practical measures to deter burglars and protect their homes while they are away by keeping expensive Christmas presents out of view, installing an alarm or even fitting timers to lights and radios," he notes.
Policyholders were recently advised by
home insurance provider RIAS to check that they are covered over the festive period.
