From July 26th, new EU regulations will result in "a new era" for disabled passengers travelling by plane, according to Jane's.

Passengers of reduced mobility (PRM) will be able to enjoy a range of additional rights while flying once the rules come into effect, which place the onus of ensuring PRMs are treated fairly on the managing bodies of Europe's airports.

Responsibility currently lies with tour operators and airliners, the online resource explains.

A spokesperson for the Airport Operators Association said that UK airports were ready for the new rules and would be fully prepared for the changes when they come into effect.

The new rules include obligatory disability awareness training for all staff working in the region's 400 airports.

Airports will be entitled to ensure that the new requirements are met themselves, or can alternatively subcontract the task to PRM associations.

The Office for National Statistics reports nearly one in five people of working age in the UK have some form of disability.
