Around one in four consumers does not have home contents insurance, the Association of British Insurers (ABI) recently asserted.

Spokesperson for the association Kelly Ostler stated that many people are required by their mortgage provider to have building insurance, while protection for contents tends to be a lesser priority, especially for people on lower incomes.

"If every house on your street has been burgled six times then your premium will be reflected accordingly. It depends on what type of crime goes on in your area as well," she said.

Ms Ostler concluded by explaining that in areas where car crime is more prevalent, motor insurance premiums would be affected, rather than household insurance.

The British Crime Survey indicates that there were 300,555 recorded offences of household burglary in England and Wales in 2005-06, representing a fall of some seven per cent compared to the previous year.

Homeowners may find they can benefit from obtaining a quote for both car and home insurance from InsureandGo.
