Roughly one in four households do not have home contents insurance, the Association of British Insurers (ABI) stated in recent days.
General insurance press officer for the association Malcolm Tarling stated that people who traditionally feel as though they are "outside" the insurance sector, such as those with low incomes, are the most vulnerable to crime.
Consequently, they are the consumers who would benefit most by protecting themselves with
home insurance.
"We have a duty to ensure that people have understood the benefits of the product and we have a duty to try and extend the availability of that product," Mr Tarling added.
He concluded that people often think that they cannot meet the expense of the financial service, but if they shop around, they can find cover that is available at a price they can afford.
ABI statistics indicate that poorer households are 71 per cent more likely to be burgled at least once than their higher-income counterparts.
