Research into modern financial etiquette has found that almost a third (30 per cent) of people keep a financial secret from their partner.

A study by Cater Allen found that 27 per cent of women have fibbed about the cost of the clothes they purchase.

However, men are even more secretive with some 28 per cent of men admitting to lying about the cost of a gadget they have bought.

Managing director of the firm Richard Dunn commented: "While it has traditionally been considered bad manners to talk about money, this research shows that modern Britons are not comfortable with being upfront about their financial affairs, too."

Lying about the cost of purchases may result in home insurance premiums not being able to cover the cost of replacing an item should it be damaged in an unexpected accident.

Recent research by finance firm Fool.co.uk indicated that 66 per cent of people think money is a subject that should be kept private.
