As the nation prepares for bonfire night, it has been revealed that some 35 per cent of households do not know the ins and outs - or of - the Firework Code.

Advising consumers to study up on how to stay safe this Guy Fawkes' night, head of home insurance at Churchill Martin Scott comments: "Personal safety and preventing potential damage to property should be at the forefront of householders' minds on bonfire night."

Research by the firm has suggested that many Brits are unaware of fundamental safety rules that could prevent injury to themselves and damage to their homes.

Figures suggest that almost one in ten (8 per cent) of British homes have been damaged as a result of stray fireworks and that some 21 per cent of householders are unaware of the correct distance to stand from a firework when lighting it.

Individuals are advised to make sure all fireworks bought comply with safety code BS 7114.

With the average firework-related damage to a house costing over £300 to put right, consumers wishing to shop around for home insurance may wish to contact InsureandGo for a quote.
