As many as one in three drivers admit failing to comply with the Highway Code and other driving rules, new research reveals.

Insurance firm Elephant.co.uk has released the results of a poll indicating that one in three Brits admit to ignoring a number of the rules of the road.

Illegal behaviour includes failing to wear a seatbelt, running red lights and failing to stop at pedestrian crossings.

Other rules often overlooked include parking in prohibited zones and ignoring other parking laws - a decision that could potentially increase the risk of a collision and consequently increase car insurance premiums.

Brian Martin, managing director of the company, states: "Perhaps the parking laws that will be introduced in the autumn whereby drivers can be charged using CCTV footage might stop more of them breaking these rules."

A set of new Highway Code rules including the prohibition of eating while at the wheel was implemented in December 2007, although Churchill Insurance noted that much confusion remained prevalent among UK drivers over the new laws.
