A survey has shown nearly a third of holidaymakers say they do not need travel insurance, it has been reported.

The survey of 1,000 people, reported in the International Travel Insurance Journal, also claimed that a fifth of respondents said they couldn’t afford insurance, citing the credit crunch as the reason.

Erfan Hussain, a spokesperson for the Association of British Insurers, said that travel insurance gives "peace of mind" for travellers and reassure them that they won't be left on holiday with no money and that they can afford medical treatment should an accident happen.

Steve Johnson, head of insurance at Sainsbury's, said it was a false economy to go abroad without the correct insurance and it was a holiday essential that is as important as a passport.

In related news, the Liverpool Echo has reported on a couple who were left stranded in Cuba when Hurricane Ike hit. Jake Norton, 29, and Emma Baker, 28, were at the tourist resort of Guadalavaca when the storm came and were supposed to fly home last Monday, but had to stay after the airports were closed.
