British motorists are more likely to have an accident on the small roads close to their home than on motorways, new research reveals.
A study by moneysupermarket.com found that nearly a third of drivers have had a car accident within close proximity to where they live.
It found that motorists are six times more likely to have an accident on a small road than a motorway.
Just five per cent have had a crash on a motorway, compared to around 30 per cent who had crashed on smaller roads.
"While motorists must remain vigilant at all times, danger clearly lurks close to home for many drivers, with collisions most likely to happen in their neighbourhood and places they visit regularly," said Richard Mason, managing director of insurance at moneysupermarket.com.
He added: "This suggests motorists become complacent when navigating familiar routes, often leading to costly prangs and resulting insurance claims."
