Accommodation is the most likely cause of complaint for Britons when on holiday, a survey of holiday reps by Halifax has revealed.

More than 80 per cent of complaints received by holiday reps were reported as being due to accommodation, in most cases when it didn't match the holiday brochure or website description.

Complaints of rooms filled with cockroaches, or substantial levels of noise pollution and building work nearby were also made.

And frustration among Britons on holiday seems to be growing, with over three quarters of holiday reps saying they had been shouted at or verbally abused by their customers, with a third having been physically threatened.

Many tourists are also unaware of the basic safety rules to have in mind when abroad, according to reps; about 20 per cent of holidaymakers don't know that a police report is necessary in order to validate an insurance theft claim.

Two thirds of holiday reps also said that they have been in situations where travellers did not have travel insurance or a European Health Insurance card.
