The Galapagos Islands may be considered one of the world's most unique ecosystems but adventure sports on the Ecuadorian archipelago are increasingly becoming a favourite of the most intrepid travellers.

Famed for providing Charles Darwin with the inspiration for Origin of the Species, the islands have a vast number of endemic species that are not found anywhere else on earth.

The iconic giant tortoise, which can live to over 100 years old, is one example but the density of these unique species is such that they are heavily guarded in order to preserve them for future generations.

However, adventure tours are beginning to take off in the enchanted waters around the Galapagos where tourists can go scuba diving, kayaking and snorkelling, as well as opting for inland activities such as horse riding and hiking.

Visitors are often restricted from certain areas to protect the wildlife but there are still many coves and inlets to be discovered and museums on the main island which explain some of the islets' history.

Over 40 adventure sports are covered automatically by InsureandGo's travel insurance policies.
