Those wishing to travel while expecting a baby have been advised to assess the situation before making a trip.

Janet Fyle of the Royal College of Midwives has said that there are no hard and fast rules for flying during pregnancy and added that people's safety should be looked at on a case-by-case basis.

"You cannot just say that a pregnant woman can travel until whatever time, you have to look at the possibilities ... There is no list that would contain dos and don'ts, every case needs to be addressed individually," she said.

However, she advised that pregnant women with certain conditions such as hypertension or a low-lying placenta are strongly advised not to travel.

She also added that airlines have differing policies on admitting pregnant women on flights, with many preventing travel for those beyond a certain number of weeks of conceiving.

British Airways guidelines prohibit travel for those people who are more than 36 weeks pregnant.
