Advice on the Foreign Office website for those getting married abroad suggests contacting the local authority in the country on arrival.
According to the site, some of the documents needed to get married or have a civil partnership abroad can take months to be ready, so wedding planners should check which documents they need well in advance.
Other tips include checking if you need to obtain a visa to travel and checking if you need any vaccinations before travelling to a tropical place to get hitched.
Some countries need couples to provide proof of residence there before getting married and in some places this can mean you have had to have been in the country for over 30 days.
The Foreign Office also points out that any information or documents needed to travel, such as visas, also apply to any guests travelling to the wedding.
In related news, research published on Headline Money claims that one in ten of British people who have a holiday romance end up marrying the person, with those over 60 the most likely age group to find love on their holidays.
