Australian national airline Qantas has welcomed a new "open skies" agreement announced by the country's minister for infrastructure, transport and regional development.
The deal will see an increased number of flights between Australia and the US, with Qantas chief executive Geoff Dixon saying that he supported the aims to achieve a "fully liberalised" flight schedule.
"We welcome the outcome. It brings new opportunities for growth and competition. Importantly, it will assist the further development of Australia's aviation industry," he added.
An agreement would make it easier to travel between the two countries, he asserted, something that may be of interest to those planning around-the-world trips.
Thebackpackingsite.com calls Australia a premium destination for gap year travellers and an "incredibly cosmopolitan country" which offers travellers much - in part due simply to its great size.
