Airlines have an undeserved reputation as heavy emissions producers, the European Regions Airline association has claimed.

Commenting recently, Simon McNamara, director of infrastructure and environment at the group, explained that in total, the industry was responsible for around two per cent of all CO2 emissions produced.

However, he exclaimed that in the UK, the press portrays the aviation industry as a big contributor, which he said was unfair.

"If you switch off the entire industry you are not going to solve the climate change problem. You have to work with all industries," he insisted.

According to statistics from the International Air Transport Association, the aviation sector is responsible for 12 per cent of emissions produced by the travel industry, equal to three per cent of all manmade contributions to climate change.

Meanwhile, road transport accounts for 74 per cent of total travel emissions.

Under current proposals, airlines are looking to reduce overall emissions by a 25 per cent by 2020.
