Cumbria tourism is to receive a boost if proposals to expand a local airport go ahead.

Officials at Cumbria Tourism are supporting a planning permission application from Carlisle Airport, which will see a new departure lounge created at the airport.

It also hopes to upgrade its runway, making way for more private aircraft to fly into the area, the BBC reports.

"Cumbria badly needs an airport to compete on a level playing field in today's global marketplace," chairman Eric Robson told the BBC.

"Even Devon and Cornwall have overtaken us with air links to many UK cities."

He added: "Opportunities like this don't come about very often, and local tourism business are crying out for better access and links with lucrative overseas and UK markets which are served by air."
