Excessive consumption of alcohol while on holiday can lead to insurers not paying out on travel insurance, it has been revealed.

Graeme Trudgill, technical and corporate affairs executive at the British Insurance Brokers' Association, said that the amount of alcohol actually drunk is not the issue, it is the effect of this consumption on a person which can invalidate a policy, as different people have different limits.

"If someone was completely irresponsible and exceedingly out of order then why should an insurer compensate them for their unreasonable actions?," Mr Trudgill noted.

Figures compiled by InsureandGo showed that 13 per cent of individuals on a skiing holiday admit to going on the slopes while drunk - the equivalent of up to one million people per year.

Furthermore, 18 per cent of these people said that they had an accident while doing this, with three per cent saying that it was serious.

InsureandGo offers travel insurance for responsible holidaymakers.
