The transport minister called for a debate on road pricing as a means of tackling the country's growing congestion problem.

Although unpopular with the public, the government believes that a system of charging drivers according to the amount and time at which they drive is an option for encouraging the public to use other means of transport.

Transport secretary Douglas Alexander has previously stated that road congestion costs the UK economy £8 billion a year and is keen to moot new ideas as to cutting this figure.

"I welcome the opportunity to take forward what I asked for in my first speed as secretary of state for transport, which was to take forwards the debate on road pricing," he told Radio 4's Today programme.

"We have said we want a national debate about road pricing and ultimately it will be a matter for parliament to make decisions but it is important that people have the chance to have their say."

An anti-road pricing petition posted on the Downing Street website recently received over a million signatories, indicating the scale of public opposition to the system.
