The Algarve in Portugal is the most popular destination for Britons on holiday, according to a new report by the Sun.

According to the newspaper, the Portugal hot spot drew record numbers for workers on a summer holiday.

The area's beautiful beaches, sunshine, family-friendly resorts and championship golf courses.

'Bookings from January to August are actually up nine per cent year on year on the Algarve in general,' the Sun quoted a spokesman from the Association of British Travel Agents as saying.

There are worries the publicity over the McCann case which took place in precisely that Portuguese area could negatively affect numbers in the latter part of 2007.

But the area is a 'year-round favourite' and has been for years, providing for strong fundamentals that continue to appeal to the UK holidaymakers, the region's top overseas visitors.

The Algarve is the most southern area of Portugal and has a unique combination of mountains and beaches, and only 410,000 total inhabitants.
