Spain's Alicante had its hottest year since 1950 in 2006 and if current weather trends continue, sun-loving Brits could be in store for an extended holiday season in the Spanish province.

The National Meterological Institute reports that the last 12 months in Alicante have been 2.6 degrees warmer than the long-term average, according to TypicallySpanish.com.

But in Pedreguer and Torrevieja the sunny weather reached three degrees higher than one would expect and for over six months the temperature did not dip under 20 degrees, meaning that travellers were able to enjoy a typically Mediterranean summer even in months outside the traditional tourist season.

Alicante is home to the Costa Blanca, one of the most popular destinations for Brits abroad over the last decade. The glorious weather and stunning coastline make for an ideal water sports location offering windsurfing, jet skiing, snorkelling and scuba diving.

And there is also a plethora of adventure sports available on land including, climbing, mountain ascents, ridge walking, scrambling, abseiling and canyon descents.

Over 40 adventure sports are covered automatically by InsureandGo's travel insurance policies.
