San Francisco will welcome the arrival of a gang of sea lions to the bay this weekend.

The event began in 1990 and San Francisco residents have enjoyed the annual return of the sea lions to Pier 39, where the animals rest in the sun, reports Whatsonwhen.

Pier 39's K-dock has since been declared an official viewing area by Watchable Wildlife.

The sea lions return to the bay area each year to feast on herring and are watched by thousands of spectators.

Entrance to the pier is free and will be open on Saturday 19th from 12:00pm until 4:00pm EST.

Other upcoming events at Pier 39 include Tulipmania in February, which showcases thousands of tulips throughout both levels of the pier, as well as Independence Day fireworks celebrations.

Those planning a late summer trip may be interested in Viva Las Americas in August, which celebrates Hispanic heritage month.
