Despite the deepening credit crisis, consumers still see their annual holiday as an essential part of their wellbeing, it has been suggested.
According to Dermot Blastland, managing director of TUI Travel UK, parent company of Thomson and First Choice, the firm has seen no drop in travel bookings in recent months.
Indeed, he claimed that recent research carried out by the group had indicated that even if people were making cutbacks, more than half would put their annual break at the bottom of the list of things to forgo.
"Despite talk of a credit crunch, the vast majority of customers do not see their main annual holiday as a luxury but rather as a necessity," Mr Blastland claimed.
Elsewhere, research from the Association of British Travel Agents carried out in September has shown that of all those who have recently returned from a summer break, 83 per cent intended to book another holiday within the following 12 months.
