Consumers are likely to find that any kind of home extension will increase their home insurance premium, according to the Basement Information Centre.

Director of the firm Alan Tovey explained that as an enlargement of a house increases the value of the property, people can expect to pay more for their cover.

He added that home insurance is based on the value of a structure and the potential cost of rebuilding it, should it need to be.

Mr Tovey concluded that when having work carried out, consumers should ensure that the people doing the construction are also fully insured.

Lloyds TSB recently warned homeowners to avoid having work carried out by cowboy builders, as the quality of their craftsmanship is often low and any botched jobs can be costly to put right.

People shopping around for a competitive deal on home insurance may find that InsureandGo can offer them a cheap quote.
