Apple has unveiled what is thought to be the world's fastest wireless networking hub.

The AirPort Extreme utilises the super fast 802.11n Wi-Fi specification, as well as 802.11n technology coupled with a MIMO smart antenna.

The good news for consumers is that it is compatible with older Macs and PCs that operate on the 802.11b/g wireless system and it can support both 2.4GHz and 5GHz wireless frequencies, cutting down on interference from other electric appliances that run on the 2.4GHz system.

"The new Airport Extreme is the most powerful and easy to use Wi-Fi base station that we have ever made," remarked Apple's senior vice president of worldwide product marketing, Philip Schiller.

"'With five times the performance and twice the range, now you can transfer bigger files faster and get access to the internet and your favourite digital media from many areas in your house you couldn't reach before."

The new device is set to be launched in the UK next month, with a recommended price tag of £119.

January has been a busy time for Apple and yesterday it also revealed its much-anticipated mobile phone, the iPhone.
