Australia is becoming one of the top destinations for backpackers, according to new research from Tourism Research Australia (TRA).

Data from the TRA showed that there was a 13 per cent increase in backpackers in the southern regions of Australia up until June 2007 for a total of 103,000.

The percentage growth was the highest of all Australia's regions, although strong growth was also recorded in New South Wales and Queensland, which remained the biggest draw as recorded in total numbers.

New South Wales saw a rise of five per cent in visitors, and Queensland three per cent.

But the growth in South Australia backpackers was a sign of second-time visitors trying to discover the least well-known parts of the country, chief executive officer of YHA South Australia argued.

'Traditionally it has always been the east coast for backpackers but they are gradually realising South Australia should be on their list of destinations when they come to Australia,' he said.

The increase also reflected word of mouth among travellers, he added.
