Travellers to Australia have been warned of taking care not to be ripped off by local bogus guides.

According to a study commissioned by the Tourism Business Alliance, some visitors to Australia's best known landmarks, which are free to enter, are being charged a cover by fake guides.

The study showed tourists being charged to enter the Sydney Opera House and even Bondi Beach, which consists of wide open spaces.

And tourists are also being cheated out of their money for goods they bought while they were on vacation.

Some tourists were made to pay as much as £10 for a packet of Macadamia nuts, while others were charged close to £500 for a sheepskin rug.

But, speaking to the Guardian, Matthew Hingerty, director of the Australian Tourism Export Council, said it wasn't tourists from the West that were most at risk.

'People from countries like Hong Kong, China and Taiwan are relatively new to travel and are much more innocent than other visitors. Tourists from the UK are more savvy. They do a lot of research… and know how to get the best value out of their holidays,' he said.
