Author and illustrator Jan Pienkowski talks of his love for his home city in the Telegraph this week.

Hailing from Warsaw, Poland, the author lived in the city as a child before it was destroyed during the Second World War in 1944. He visited it a number of times during restoration work and he says that despite some of the work not being done in the "best possible taste" he loves Warsaw "warts and all".

For those considering a trip to the city Mr Pienkowski recommends staying in the Polonia Palace Hotel or the Boutique B&B on the ul Smolna 14/7.

He says that when meeting friends for a drink he often goes to Cafe Kulturalna in the Palace of Culture and Science which he describes as a "lively and popular" venue in a picturesque interior of a landmark communist-era building.

Warsaw Life calls the city the vibrant heart of the largest country in New Europe.

Those considering a trip to Poland or any other European country should ensure they get the right travel insurancecover.
