Cutting emissions produced by the aviation and shipping industry will be more difficult than reducing levels of pollutants in other sectors, Friends of the Earth has claimed.
According to the organisation, many parties do not believe that steep cuts can be made in the amount of emissions produced by flights and commercial shipping in the near future.
However, Martyn Williams, a climate change campaigner for the group, said it was possible to offset this in reductions made in other industries.
Commenting on the effects of inaction, Mr Williams warned that there is likely to be a rise in the number of car and
home insurance claims.
"We will have to deal with more extreme weather events, more flooding and more insurance claims," he insisted.
The Committee on Climate Change has called for an 80 per cent reduction in emissions by 2050.
Mr Williams concluded that reaching this target was possible and that the costs of failing to do so would greatly outweigh the investment required to make industries cleaner.
