Consumers should be aware of the possibilities of accidentally damaging their possessions over Christmas, according to Halifax Home Insurance.

The Nintendo Wii has been identified as the number-one festive gift this year by the provider and it has urged consumers to be careful when playing with the motion sensitive games console.

Halifax notes that there have been reports of over-exuberant players accidentally throwing their handsets across the room as they play, a move which could potentially cause thousands of pounds worth of damage and the need to make a home insurance clam.

Senior claims manager for the firm Martyn Foulds explained: "We have noticed several home insurance claims for television screen damage coming through recently from people who have accidentally let go of the Wii handset."

Meanwhile, the firm recently suggested that Brits can avoid causing accidental damage to their properties while carrying out DIY projects by not trying to copy techniques seen on home improvement shows.
