Britons need to be more aware of the dangers of Type 1 diabetes, it has been claimed.

Ross Kester, a spokesperson for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, said many people understand Type 2 diabetes can be brought on through poor diet, but a greater understanding of Type 1 diabetes is also needed.

He commented: "There has been a lot of media attention recently concerning Type 2 diabetes and this is a good thing because people need to be aware of the seriousness of the condition."

Diabetes is an illness which can significantly impact on an individual's life insurance and should be treated as a serious condition.

According to Diabetes UK, at present, an estimated seven million people in the UK have prediabetes.

The organisation noted recent research has shown prediabetes may already be causing long-term damage to the body - especially the heart and circulatory system - while individuals with this condition are 15 times more likely to develop diabetes in later life than other Brits.
