A history of illness or a long-term illness need not be a barrier to acquiring travel insurance, the British Insurance Brokers' Association (BIBA) has advised.

According to Steve Foulsham, spokesperson for BIBA, the main travel insurance companies tend to cater for "Mr and Mrs Average" and it is difficult for persons outside it to get cover.

Having a history of illnesses or having undergone a long-term illness in the past could add significantly to your premium.

But there are specialist insurance providers willing to cover customers with a medical history, with rates depending on the severity of the condition.

"The majority of insurers tend to take the view that if it's a fairly chronic or serious condition, they would probably wish to exclude anything relating to that condition [in terms of the cover]. This really means that you need to source a specific travel provider who is able to cover those circumstances," said Mr Foulsham.

BIBA currently campaigns for greater regulation and provision in the travel insurance industry.
